Young Actor Auditions for The Sound of Music

The Utah Shakespeare Festival is seeking young actors based in southern Utah for its upcoming summer and fall production of The Sound of Music, directed and choreographed by Keenon Hooks. Auditions will be Saturday, March 5 at the Southern Utah University Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, with invited callbacks that day from 1p.m. to 4 p.m.

Those interested should come prepared to sing and dance as part of the audition. Actors invited to callbacks may be asked to read a scene from the show.

If hired as part of the acting company, young actors must attend rehearsals and performances from May 9 to Oct. 8. All actors must be available for all scheduled rehearsals and performances. This may not include every day, but will include Saturdays. The Sound of Music will play four times a week with two matinees and two evening performances each week.

All actors will be paid. All roles will be understudied, and all young actors may be asked to serve as understudies.

The Festival is specifically looking for children of all ages to play the following roles:

  • Friedrich (14-year-old boy)

  • Kurt (10, boy)

  • Louisa (13, girl)

  • Brigita (9, girl)

  • Marta (7, girl)

  • Gretl (about 6, girl)

    All actors must be able to sing and move.

In agreement with our union contracts, the Utah Shakespeare Festival is seeking a fully vaccinated company, including young performers. While the Festival strongly encourages all employees to be vaccinated, it is not contingent for hiring. However, vaccination status may impact work locations and assignments.


Business Projects Coordinator

The principal function of this position is coordination, communication, and oversight focused on community, education, and general operational and financial activities of the Utah Shakespeare Festival.


Marketing Manager

The Utah Shakespeare Festival marketing manager works closely with the director of development and communications manages and oversees all aspects of all traditional and digital marketing campaigns to effectively promote the brand's product and procure new as well as keep long-time Festival patrons.


Company Management Assistants

The Utah Shakespeare Festival company management assistants will help with the hospitality, arrival, residency, and departure of all seasonal company members and other festival employees.


Hair and Make-Up Staff

Utah Shakespeare Festival is a multi-cultural organization. We seek skilled hair and make-up professionals with the skill to provide services to a diverse company.

Wigmaster: Works with costume designer and hair and make-up director to determine approach to implementing design. Develops schedule with hair and make-up director. Oversees daily operation of a make-up studio and wig construction of assigned productions with assistant. Participates in the construction and implementation of design elements. Contracts are early/late May to mid-June/early July.

Assistant Wigmaster: Assists the wigmaster in constructing and implementing hair and make-up designs. Oversees daily operation of make-up studio and wig construction of assigned productions. Contracts are early/late May to mid-June/early July

Hair and Make-up Run Crew: Assists actors with hairstyles, wigs, and makeup. Also maintains styles of wigs and facial hair during the run of assigned productions. Contracts are June through mid-September/October.


Costume Shop Staff

Draper: Oversees all construction of costumes for assigned show. Works in direct relationship with costume designer. Contracts are May 2–July 2 or June–July 13.

First Hand: Works with the draper to construct and supervise construction of costumes. Supervises costume technicians. Contracts are May 2–July 2 or June 1–July 13.

Technician: Constructs all costume pieces assigned by first hand. Contracts are May 2–July 2 or June 1–July 13.

Wardrobe: Works on the run of assigned productions assisting in preparation and maintenance (laundry and repair) of costumes. Contracts are June 1–October 11 or June 11–September 10 or July 4–October 11.

Assistant Costume Crafts Supervisor: Assists with the operation of costume crafts including scheduling of fittings and attending fittings; helps interpret costume designer's sketches and ideas and assists with problem solving and engineering of costume crafts items. Contract is May 2–July 2.

Senior Crafts Technician: Creates all accessory or special costume projects as designed by the costume designer (shoes, armor, hats, jewelry, accessories). May have a specialty in one or more areas. Contracts are May 2–July 2 or June 1–July 13

Crafts Technician: Assists senior crafts technician in the construction of all accessories or special costume projects. Contracts are May 2–July 2 or June 1–July 13


Technical Director

Under the direction of the Utah Shakespeare Festival Scenery Director, this position is responsible for the timely completion of all scenery for assigned shows and or venue which include the planning, engineering, scheduling, and supervision of the construction and installation of all scenery. Responsible for maintaining the organization's standards and practices in regards to quality and safety as well as adherence to Festival work schedules and calendars. Contract begins immediately offsite (attending meetings and doing prep work) with residency from early May to Mid-July


Scene Shop Staff

Assistant Technical Director: Assists the technical director with supervising construction and load-in of scenery for assigned productions. Participates in the construction of scenic elements as needed. Completes shop improvement and organization projects as assigned. Contracts start April 30 and end July 1.

Early-Build Scenic Carpenter: Constructs and loads in all scenic elements for assigned productions. Completes shop improvement and organization projects as assigned. Contracts start March 21 and end June 24 or July 1 (depending on theatre assignment).

Scenic Carpenter: Constructs and loads in all scenic set elements for assigned productions. Completes shop improvement and organization projects as assigned. Contracts start March 21 and end June 24 or July 1 (depending on theatre assignment).

Junior Carpenter/Stage Crew: Constructs and loads-in all scenic set elements for assigned productions. Responsible for running, storage, and maintenance of scenery for assigned productions. Contracts begin late May/early June and run through early September/mid-October.


Properties Supervisor

Responsible for the organization, management, and coordination of all props for the shows they are assigned to (generally three shows in rep in one theatre venue). Works with the properties director and assistant properties director to manage personnel, equipment, and supplies in the props department. Helps to ensure completion of all prop work for the season.


Electrics Staff

Lighting Supervisor: Responsible for managing the venue lighting team and installing systems and equipment for each production. Responsible for supporting lighting designers in carrying out the production and for providing lighting support for all productions in assigned venue(s). Contracts begin early May and run through late July/early August.

Lighting Technician: Responsible for the execution of lighting on a daily basis for all assigned productions. Operates lighting consoles during final rehearsals and performances. Operates spotlights as assigned for all productions. Contracts begin early/late May and end early July with some extending as late as mid-October.

FOH Audio Technician: Responsible for setup, operation, and changeover during rehearsals and performances. Duties may include live mixing of actors and/or orchestra. Contracts begin early/late May and end early July with some extending as late as mid-October.

Wireless Mic Technician: The position works in conjunction with the FOH engineer(s) and designer for set up and use of wired and wireless microphones on the musical. The position is also responsible for other wireless and wired microphone systems used throughout the Festival. Contracts begin early/late May and end early September with some extending as late as mid-October.


Stage Crew

Deck Carpenter: Responsible for load in, running, organization of storage, and maintenance of scenery and props for a theatre (Engelstad, Randall, or Anes). Works with scenery director on stage crew schedule and necessary adjustments. Contracts begin April 30 and run through September 12 or October 12 (depending on theatre assignment).

Junior Carpenters/Painters/Prop Interns: Responsible for load in, running, storage, changeovers, and maintenance of scenery and props for assigned productions. Contracts begin April 30 and run through September 12 or October 12 (depending on theatre assignment).

Stage Crew: Responsible for load in, running, storage, and changeovers of scenery and props for assigned productions. Contracts begin May 28 and run through September 12 or October 12 (depending on theatre assignment).

All crew positions will be required to work some hours between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m.


2022 Season Acting Company

The audition submission window for Utah Shakespeare Festival's 2022 season is now closed, and we have now begun the long process of viewing the more than 1500 tapes that we received. If we need additional information from anyone, we will reach out to them individually. We are not accepting late submissions at this time.

The casting process will not be completed until at least the end of February. Thank you to all who submitted. Please check back next fall for submission/audition guidelines for 2023. 

Auditions for the children’s roles in the 2022 summer season will not take place until spring.
